Gurgling tummy sounds, intestinal movement, burping, passing gas... these things happen during treatments all the time! And it's music to an acupuncturist's ears! ⁠ ⁠ Here's the deal: for your digestive system to work properly, your nervous system needs to be in a parasympathetic, or rest-digest, state. In this state, blood pressure lowers, heart rate slows, breathing deepens. Your immune system activates, your body works on cell repair and regeneration. Stress hormones diminish. Your digestive system kicks into gear, breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, separating waste products and moving them down the digestive tract line. All your muscles relax. ⁠ ⁠ Parasympathetic time is when you digest your food - and digest your life. ⁠ ⁠ Time in a parasympathetic state is so, so important! ⁠ ⁠ The thing is, most of us are running around in a fight, flight, or freeze (sympathetic) state a lot of the time. In this state, stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline flood the system, heart rate and blood pressure go up, breath becomes more rapid and shallow, muscles become more tense. Digestive and immune system activity are reduced big-time. Have you ever noticed messed up digestion, or frequent colds or flus, during very stressful times in your life? Those little needles are super effective at shifting your body into a rest-digest state - it's like a switch flips in your body during a treatment.
